BMW Training Center Upgrades to BMW-Certified CDR1 & CTR9

Project Overview & On-Site Training by Autotality

The BMW Group Training Center in Greer, South Carolina is widely regarded as one of the leading collision-repair training facilities in the region. Each year it hosts students, technicians, and certified collision-repair professionals who come to stay current on BMW OEM repair standards. When BMW updates its official equipment list, it matters, not just for dealerships, but for every collision shop that wants to maintain or earn BMW certification.

This month, Autotality was invited to the Greer facility to support a major equipment upgrade and helped provide hands-on implementation training for BMW’s newest approved systems: the Car-O-Liner CDR1 and the CTR9 resistance spot welder. Learn more about our collision shop welding equipment.

The facility previously relied on the CTR1200, a workhorse for many years. But as vehicle designs evolve, especially with BMW’s growing use of advanced steels and mixed-material chassis, the need for more precise, higher-performing OEM-approved welding equipment has only increased.

Upgrading to the CTR9 and adding the newly BMW-certified CDR1 ensures the center’s instructors and students train on the same technology required in certified collision shops.

Car-O-Liner CDR1 – Now Fully BMW-Certified

John Shewbridge led the Car-O-Liner CDR1 implementation and training session.

Technicians trained on:

  • Proper setup and calibration
  • Using the CDR1 for outer-panel repair, steel, aluminum and glue pulling
  • Applying OEM-specific repair procedures
  • Understanding how the tooling integrates into BMW’s certified repair workflow

Because BMW’s repair standards emphasize precision, repeatability, and material-specific joining methods, the CDR1’s approval gives certified shops confidence that their repairs meet strict OEM safety and performance requirements.

For the training center, having BMW-certified equipment in the classroom ensures that every student is learning the correct methods, not approximations. This bridges the gap between training and real-world collision-repair environments.

Car-O-Liner CTR9 – Replacing the Legacy CTR1200

Next, Jeff led training on the Car-O-Liner CTR9.

The CTR9 introduces:

  • A lighter, more ergonomic design
  • Improved transformer-gun performance
  • Easier arm changes and setup
  • Advanced weld monitoring and automatic parameter control
  • Compliance with BMW’s most current OEM welding requirements

For BMW-certified shops, the CTR9 is not just an upgrade, it’s the new baseline. With more advanced steels and body structures used in modern BMW vehicles, welding equipment must deliver consistent results that meet strict tolerances. Jeff’s session focused on real-world usage, proper gun handling, system programming, and understanding BMW’s recommended weld parameters.

By training instructors and technicians on-site, Autotality helped to ensure the BMW Training Center team is fully prepared to teach these updated OEM processes to shops across the region.

Why Upgrading Matters for BMW-Certified Shops

For collision centers working on BMW vehicles, keeping pace with evolving OEM standards is essential. Upgrading to BMW-certified systems like the CDR1 and CTR9 ensures shops maintain their certification, meet strict requirements, and deliver repairs that perform exactly as the manufacturer intended. With the newest approved equipment, technicians gain better accuracy, safer welds, and more efficient workflows, allowing shops to stay competitive in the certified collision network while confidently servicing the newest BMW models.
